Are you thinking about this technology and don't know how 3D printing works? Many types of printers and materials can be confusing. We have prepared a practical guide on how to start with 3D printing. You will find out what types of printers are currently on sale and which one is suitable for your printing needs.
How does 3D printing work?
First of all, it is important to imagine the 3D printing itself. You probably know the standard printer that prints ink on paper to create text. You have it at home and you use it very often.
A 3D printer uses object modeling in layers, using different types of materials as a fill. The most commonly used refills are made of ABS plastic material or PLA refills.
Among the first and now well available are the so-called UV Resin (resin) printers. Then we know FDM printers, which range in several price ranges and can now be relatively cheap. However, the more expensive models add speed.
At present, we already know more expensive resin printers that will turn a liquid cartridge into your final design. Their main specification is the ability to capture unreal details, which conventional FDM printers cannot.
Design proposal
The 3D printing itself consists of two steps. It is about designing the design using software (eg CURA) and the actual implementation of printing through a printer. When it comes to design, the main advantage is that you can customize all the features of the final object. It is up to you what structure the final product will have resp. printed object.
However, it is not necessary to plan the final proposal. If you don't dare, there are several practical and ready-made suggestions on the Internet that can make your work easier. For example, try suggestions offered by portals like Thingiverse or Instructable.
Process and print speed
At this point, the values again differ. The printing process, speed, or accuracy of the details depend on the type of printer and the technology that the printer offers.
As we have already explained, the 3D printer, unlike the standard one, does not use ink, but cartridges, usually made of plastic material or resin.
If we look at the solid material, the printer technology itself heats the plastic material and then applies it in the necessary layers to the pad at the bottom of the printer. According to the design, the object is printed from its lower part in individual layers to the upper edge.
The printer is ready for layered printing through its components. The basic model of the printer includes an extruder, cartridge, hot nozzle, cooling, pad for printing or display. The print speed then also depends on the details and the number of layers of printing.
What objects do we print?
Various objects can be printed using the 3D printer. From cheerful characters, the construction of toys or other, for example, spare components, current technologies allow us to print much more.
Modern designs can print selected parts of the human body or medical and protective equipment in the form of shields, which were extremely important and valuable, especially during the still current coronavirus pandemic.
Color printing
Looking back, the original inkjet printers were only able to print in black and white. So they used only black ink. Later, color inkjet printers that used cartridges of three colors also came on the market. By mixing these colors, they formed a color print.
The 3D printer has a very similar principle. We can currently find a number of monochrome and two-color 3D printers on the market. However, printers with RGB color spectrum can also be found.
Several color combinations are created using a process called extrusion. In this case, an advanced and extremely hot extruder mixes several color cartridges and produces the final desired colors through a nozzle.
