Packaging and its contents
The electric scooter HIMO L2 was delivered to us by a DPD courier. It is packed in a relatively large box with two plastic straps, which makes it easier to carry. The weight of the total package is about 24 kg. Unfortunately, the box in which the courier delivered the scooter to us was damaged in several places.
It is a pity that the seller did not pack the scooter in another, protective box, which would increase the quality of packaging protection.
Fortunately, only the box was damaged. The scooter was in perfect condition, without any damage or scratches. Inside, each component is additionally protected by additional cardboard or at least foil.
The scooter is stored in a box folded with the handlebars disconnected. These are protected by cardboard. In a separate box you will also find a charger with instructions for installation and use, as well as screws with an Allen key. A nice bonus is a small pump for inflating tires. The free space in the box is filled with cardboard reinforcements.
Folding the HIMO L2 scooter
The assembly of the scooter itself is very simple and you don't even need instructions for use, which is very clear and well processed. As we mentioned above, the scooter itself is in a folded state in the box, only the handlebars are disconnected.
All you have to do is remove the scooter from the box, align the rod leading to the handlebars, secure it with the locking lever and hold the handlebars in place. These are mounted as with most similar scooters, using four screws to the main bar. The package also includes an Allen key designed for this purpose, so you do not need any tools of your own.
The next step is to attach the front light to the bottom of the bar, using one screw. And that is all. All you have to do is inflate the tires and the scooter is ready for the first ride. As you can see, the assembly is really very simple and you can handle it in a few minutes without any difficulties.
Processing quality and dimensions
At first glance, you can see that the scooter has a really powerful and high-quality construction. The primary scooter editor who writes this review is Xiaomi Mi Scooter Pro, but compared to HIMO L2 acts as a little brother from Xiaomi. The dimensions of the HIMO L2 scooter are 1180 × 495 × 1200 mm. For comparison, the mentioned scooter from Xiaomi has 1080 × 430 × 1140 mm.
The whole construction is metal and the frame itself is the dominant element of the scooter, as it is guided along the circumference of the tread part, above the rear wheel fender. The scooter is available in several colors, which differ in the color of this perimeter frame. All welds are nice and the overall impression of the scooter is excellent.
The bar that leads to the handlebars is black in each color and its diameter is up to 4.7 cm. The handlebars are 120 cm from the ground and their height is not adjustable, which, however, contributes to better strength. Although the telescopic rod is great for those who need to adjust the height of the handlebars, it often reduces the overall strength. The width of the handlebars is approximately 50 cm and the grips for gripping the handlebars are also pleasantly thick with a diameter of 3.5 cm. They are also rubberized and look almost the same as on a Xiaomi scooter.
However, what we like the most is the large enough legroom. It is 21 cm wide and approximately 55 cm long, including the length of the straight part. In the rear and front part, this space is rounded to flow seamlessly with the structure.
Due to its dimensions, the electric scooter is also suitable for taller figures and people with a larger number of shoes. It will please with its high-quality construction, which is extremely strong and durable. In terms of design, we have nothing to complain about the scooter, and from our point of view it is a very successful and clean design.
Wheels, brakes and component layout
Unfortunately, the HIMO L2 has no suspension, which is why it is a city scooter. However, riding comfort is increased by 10 ″ tires, which are unusually wide for a city scooter. Their width is up to 7 cm. Thanks to them, driving through the city is very comfortable. The scooter also holds better in corners and overall the feeling from the ride is very good.
The engine is located in a standard place, in the front wheel, from which the cable leads to the main rod towards the control unit. If we look at the scooter from below, we will see other cables that lead from the steering rod to the battery compartment, which is at the bottom of the scooter.
However, these cables, together with the rear brake cable, are routed very unhappily through the outside. They even touch the fender on the front wheel and could cause problems when driving off-road. It is a pity that the manufacturer did not hide these cables under a kind of cover, as they protrude unnecessarily into the outside.
In the front part, we find active LED lighting, which, however, is relatively small. It is complemented by a rear brake light on the fender and four orange reflective lenses on the sides of the scooter. The rear mudguard is also a place for a small "number plate", which is used to mark the scooter in some countries where it is required by legislation.
In the middle of the handlebars there is a clear display, which is slightly tilted upwards. The scooter is switched on by a button on the throttle control, which is located right next to the right grip. Above the power button is also the lighting control button.
As you may have noticed from the photos, the scooter has a pair of brake levers. The left one is used to control the rear, mechanical disc brake and the right one serves the functionality of the electronic brake, thanks to which you only brake with the engine. An interesting feature is the built-in bell in the left brake lever and also a practical hook in the front upper part of the main rod.
The brakes work well and their effect is sufficient. However, the electronic brake lever on the right side is not very important. The left lever, which controls the rear, disc brake, also activates engine braking, so depressing both brake levers has the same effect as depressing only the left one. You can only brake with the engine with the right lever, but it doesn't matter much, as this brake is quite weak on its own.
Tipping mechanism
The Achilles heel of many scooters in the past was the folding mechanism. If you follow the world of electric scooters, you certainly haven't missed the impractical mechanism of the scooter Kugoo S1 or the cracking beak of the first generation scooter from Xiaomi.
The HIMO L2 is folded down using a large plastic lever located at the joint of the scooter. All you have to do is unlock it using the inconspicuous button on its side and then lower the lever, which will release the joint and you can fold the scooter. The system of fastening in the folded position is special. Said hook on the main bar must be attached to a metal bracket, which is located next to the rear fender. It is not a very practical solution, but it fulfills its purpose.
Modes and controls
The scooter motor offers 350 W of power with a maximum speed of 25 km / h, which is standard in this category of scooters. When switched on, a colored symbol will appear on the display to represent the current mode. There are 3 modes graded according to the maximum speed - 15, 20 or 25 km / h. The modes are color-coded on the display in white, orange, and red, while white symbolizes the weakest mode and red the strongest.
The dominant element of the display is the current speed. Below it is a display of the battery status in the form of four sections, according to which we know about the approximate capacity of the battery. Percentage display of battery status is missing. The display is large enough, but its potential is not much used. We could imagine not only a percentage display of the battery status but also an indication of the current distance traveled, or other useful data.
The scooter is controlled by the mentioned lever in the right hand and it is enough to bounce gently to activate the engine. It is not possible to start exclusively with an electric motor without bouncing.
Range and charging
The manufacturer states that this scooter has a range of 35 km per charge. The battery consists of 40 18650 cells with a total capacity of 10.4 Ah. The range given by the manufacturer is often overshot, so we decided to verify this information.
We rode a scooter in Košice and the surrounding area with a rider who weighs 82 kg and tires inflated to 45 PSI. It was mostly flat terrain, but we also tried driving to different hills. We drove until we felt a greater loss of power and we covered exactly 29.03 km. The range given by the manufacturer is not overshot at all. You can see the route and more details about the test drive on the screenshote from the Runkeeper application.
Charging takes approximately 5 hours and 45 minutes using the included charger, which has a 42 V / 2 A output.
Our experience after intensive use of HIMO L2
We rode the HIMO L2 scooter very pleasantly. The wide tires provided a truly interesting driving experience. If we compare it with the Xiaomi Mi Scooter Pro scooter, which we use almost daily, the riding comfort is much higher with the HIMO scooter. The scooter better dampens the passage through unevenness and the overall stability is significantly better. Thanks to the wide tires, we had no problem driving with only one hand on the handlebars, while with the other we could give a signal to change direction.
Since the test editor is 185 cm tall, the higher position of the handlebars (120 cm from the ground) is also a big positive. The large foot area, which is rubberized, is also perfect, so it doesn't slip at all.
Of course, the hill scooter will slow down, but it can handle them quite well, similar to the scooter from Xiaomi in the Pro version. As for the strength, after a few rides we showed less play in the joint, where the folding mechanism is located. However, we solved this by tightening the screw in this mechanism.
Some may lack suspension, but as we mentioned, wide 10 ″ tires can dampen unevenness quite well. Of course, it would be better with the suspension, but the scooter is designed primarily for the city, where you cross the curbs with ease and thanks to the clear height of almost 13 cm.
However, larger dimensions and wide tires also have their toll. As the scooter weighs 18.7 kg, it is not one of the lightest, so it is not very comfortable to carry. The thick rod leading to the handlebars does not contribute to easy carrying either, as it is behind it that you need to hold the scooter in a folded state if you want to carry it.
The scooter does not have Bluetooth, so you will not connect it to the application on your smartphone. The popular scooter from Xiaomi has an advantage in this.
HIMO L2: Final evaluation
HIMO L2 is an excellent city scooter with a beautiful design and an extremely strong and durable construction. Its engine has an output of 350 W, it reaches a maximum speed of 25 km / h and you can travel approximately 30 km with it on a single charge.
We praise the wide tires and the generous legroom, which makes riding this scooter very comfortable. It is also suitable for taller figures, thanks to the high enough handlebars. Not even a good guy, to whom he sits like a glove, would be ashamed of this scooter.
The tax for larger dimensions, wide wheels and massive construction is its weight of 18.7 kg, due to which it is not ideal for frequent carrying in the folded state.
