Electric scooters, segways, onewheels, electric skateboards and other electric devices are gaining in popularity. Especially on summer days, it is an ideal means of transport for shorter routes. The increased number of these vehicles means an increased risk of accidents.
And that's really happening. Already this year, we recorded several cases shared by the Police of the Slovak Republic on their Facebook, when a driver on an electric scooter was involved in the accident. That is why the EU wants to respond.

Compulsory insurance for fast electric scooters
Diary N informed June 22, 2021 about a new upcoming proposal directly from the European Commission for faster electric scooters and segways. Their owners will be obliged to insure such an electric vehicle and will thus be sure of compensation in the event of an accident.
The original proposal of the European Commission also spoke of smaller and slower electric scooters, electric bicycles or tractors, but in the end they fell out of it.
Only scooters faster than 25 km / h are in the game
Finally, the new proposal will only talk about compulsory insurance for electric scooters and segways with maximum speed. more than 25 km / h. They are basically all electric scooters from 500 W, the classic smaller ones in the city have maximum speeds of up to 25-30 km / h.
However, care must be taken, as compulsory insurance will also need to be covered for smaller electric scooters and segways with a speed of more than 14 km / h, if their weight is more than 25 kilograms.
Accidents are becoming more frequent
More accidents where electric scooter drivers were the direct participants began to appear more at least this year. This is mainly due to the inattention of car drivers, who often do not even notice the electric scooter and limit them, or even prefer them. An illustrative example is this accident in Nemšová.

The police of the Slovak Republic shared 3 accidents in one status during 5 days, where they were participants in an electric scooter.
On the one hand, compulsory insurance may not be bad, as there will be some compensation in the event of accidents, which are becoming more frequent. On the other hand, owning faster electric scooters has so far been without worries. Another question is whether insurance companies will be willing to insure a scooter without a license plate, resp. any type-approval element. Then there would be a big problem with owning a more powerful electric scooter or segway.
