Electric bikes have been gaining popularity in recent years and we are seeing more and more models available, especially from China. Engwe The EP-2 Pro combines a city electric bike with a mountain bike into one, resulting in a smaller but very nimble piece. Thanks to the thick 4" tires and the powerful 750 W motor, there will be no shortage of fun.
How did you do this electric bike in our test? We did not miss the problems and we also had to solve the repair of the torque sensor, which you can read more about in the article. You will learn our feelings from the ride and, of course, we also tested the real range.

Packing and folding
Engwe The EP-2 Pro comes in a fairly large box with folded handlebars, seat, mudguards and pedals. It doesn't take too long to assemble, but we were still held back by badly pre-drilled threads, which we then had to repair. We found up to two of them and it delayed us when assembling, which we rate as a slight minus, but it's nothing terrible.
Subsequently, we just put on the front wheel, folded the steering and pulled the upper part, slid the seat, mounted the fenders and pedals. It is a simple process that everyone can handle and there is all the necessary tools in the box together with the manual. The package also includes a 54,6 V / 5 A charger.
Pedal assistance repair
Not all test products come without error, as we have also seen. On the Engwe EP-2 We are for they had to change the torque sensor, who had a torn cable and the pedaling assistance did not work, the electric motor itself did not work. However, the seller sent us a new one free of charge, which we exchanged ourselves.
The torque sensor is located on the left pedal crank. Its cable stretched under the sharp end of the bicycle frame, where exactly the accident occurred - the cable rupture. Therefore, we definitely recommend that you get the cable somewhere safe so that something similar does not happen to you.
We needed a crank puller for the repair, which we didn't have, so we had to buy it at the nearest bike shop. It was necessary to completely pull the controller out of the frame. The control is located at the back of the rod when the bicycle is unfolded.
We had to loosen the four screws around the battery connector and then we got to the controller. There was a really big tangle of cables, but we found the one from the sensor and plugged it in with a new one. In the end, we had a problem fitting the controller back into the frame, because the tangle of cables blocked it, we had a little trouble with it. After this operation, the pedal assistance worked again without any problems.
Construction and tires
After taking it out of the box, you can see that this is not just any "cheap China", but a high-quality electric bicycle with a solid aluminum alloy construction. At first glance, glaring, bold 20 inch tires with thickness 4 inches they can hold well even in good mud or snow. It can therefore also be used in winter, but here at the cost of worse travel due to cold and battery.
The tires also have larger grabs, so this model will not only be located on classic asphalt, but also off-road. Japanese brand Panaracer produces high quality tires and has specially adapted grabs for good traction and cornering, it also has heel made of Kevlar fibers, so it's a really sturdy tire.
The folding mechanism works well, just unclip the lever and then fold the whole fable in half. Just below the place where the folding hinge is located is also located key lock. This is used to unlock the battery fuse in the frame, so after turning the fuse is released and the battery can be pulled out and charged, e.g. comfortably inside.
The electric bike is 167 cm wide and 118 cm high at the highest point when unfolded. In the folded state it is only 76 cm wide and 81 cm high.
Driving modes and display
Engwe EP-2 Pro includes 3 driving modes (purely electric drive, assistance and manual), 5 speed levels and with the buttons "+" and "-" it is possible to set the intensity of the electric drive. There is also a rotary throttle on the handlebars, thanks to which the electric bike can only go on motor drive.
Holding down the "-" button activates the push assistance mode, which you can use if you can't pedal the bike but walk next to it, which is also an interesting function.
LCD display looks good, shows the current speed, battery status, driving mode and the parameter set at the bottom (ODO, etc.). It is located at the bottom edge of the drive mode control power button which is hidden and you can search for it for a long time from the beginning. However, this must be held to turn on the bike.
On the right side edge of this control there is also a button for switching on the headlight and a button for switching the data displayed on the screen.
The display also includes hidden menu by holding down the “+” and “-” buttons at the same time, where it is possible to set the reset data “trip” (tC), displayed units of km/mil (Un) or display brightness (bL). In addition, it is possible to adjust the speeds at all five levels and to adjust basically the entire bike in detail. All instructions for controlling the display can be found in this document.
Really comfortable ride
When we first got on the bike, we immediately felt the coarse wheels, which are more difficult to maneuver. She surprised us agility of electric drive and then also its hill performance. Engwe The EP-2 Pro can handle a lot. We were a little disappointed by the front suspension, which is very soft and somewhat loses its use in uneven terrain, locking the fork doesn't help either, because it basically still springs the same.
The problem with Chinese electric bikes is the position and distance of the handlebars, which then need to be adjusted. Engwe however, it has an excellently adjusted position and distance and the ride is comfortable even for taller figures. The bike would certainly be suitable for figures up to 195 cm high.
We can't praise the seat so much. It looks soft, but it didn't suit us very well, it's small, and on longer rides it starts to press on its ass. Depending on the touch, it is probably leather or imitation leather material and is quilted. However, by design, it is more suitable for a women's bicycle than for such an electric fatbike.
Note editors: Since January 2022 sends the seller new version seats with a more beautiful design, but randomly. It looks a little better.
Decent 750 W motor
Although this bike is small, it has plenty of power, which you can immediately feel when using the all-electric drive. Engwe EP-2 Pro is very nimble and can pull even up bigger hills thanks to 750 W motor and 48 V system. According to the manufacturer, it can reach a maximum speed of 45 km / h on a purely electric drive.
We managed to reach the maximum speed up 42 km/h on the plane and, for example, at higher climbs, it was not a problem to give the bike 30 km / h. However, 42 km / h is a very decent speed on an electric fatbike and looking for something brisk will not be an easy task.
There is also no shortage cruise control, which automatically turns on when driving through the gas after 8 seconds and maintains the given speed. The bike also has a special pedestrian mode by holding down the “-” button and you only need to hold it while walking, but because of its speed it is more of a running mode than a walking one.
Real range with 12,8 Ah battery
A big positive Engwe EP-2 Pro is the option to remove the battery from the frame and charge it somewhere in the comfort of your home or apartment. It has capacity 12,8 Ah and according to the manufacturer, a range of up to 80 kilometers. Charging takes about 5-7 hours and the battery is also secured against theft, in the form of the aforementioned fuse in the frame.
The test rider had a height of 180 cm and a weight of 79 kg. We managed to measure 20 km while driving with purely electric drive with a maximum speed of 5, on an asphalt road, even on gentle hills. Recall, the test was completely without treading and the weather was a bit colder outside, so the capacity decreased faster. However, the battery lasted up to a test using pedaling assistance 32,5 km, at speeds 4 and 5, which we alternated.
What we praise is the fact that it did not turn off the battery, which is a problem with some electric scooters from Laotie or X-Tron, and the engine only engaged less at lower capacity. You can then walk comfortably for a few km if the battery capacity is low, and the engine will still work for a while.
If a calmer ride with a speed of around 25 km / h using the assistance mode was chosen, the real range will probably not reach the declared 80 km from the manufacturer, but there will be approximately such real ones. 40 - 50 kilometers.
Derailleurs and brakes
Shimano derailleurs, which you will find everywhere, already have their standard and do not need to be described. However, only 7 speeds are available, which makes this bike more suitable for use in the city or village for slow driving. Even at a speed of 35 km / h at the highest gear, we had to shake our feet really fast. At the highest speed on the plane, it basically steps into space.
The Tektro brand provided Engwe high-quality mechanical disc brakes. At the beginning, it is necessary to properly run and adjust them, because the disc was rubbing at first. We fixed this by loosening the two screws with an Allen wrench, applying the brake fully and then retightening the screws. In the end, we would rate the brakes as average and sometimes they can make an unpleasant whistle.
If you would like to order this electric bicycle, you can also watch the original video about the manufacturer, how to assemble it.
Final rating Engwe EP-2 Pro
In conclusion, we can evaluate this folding electric fat bike very positively. Although we had a problem with non-functional pedaling assistance or two badly pre-drilled threads during folding, we are satisfied and definitely We can Engwe EP-2 Pro recommend. But it is more of an urban companion or a bike for a more comfortable ride. Since it has only 7 gears at a speed higher than 35 km/h, it treads on nothing and do not expect "fire" on it.
750 W engine takes great even in the hills, so even on difficult terrain you will hardly sweat on it at all. The range is decent and with a slightly fast drive in mode 3, it will definitely give you 40-50 kilometers. The derailleur and brakes are of standard quality and will not surprise you in any way.
Did we convince you to buy this electric fatbike? If so, order from an official store, they still have it available in the EU stock even at the best price.

I just assembled it and the electric drive doesn't work. Otherwise, it does not respond to turning the add button.
There must be a mistake in the article.
If the charger is 5A, why does it take 5-7 hours to recharge. It should be around 3 hours for a 12Ah battery.
Perhaps it is a 2A charger?
