NFC Forum, a group founded by Sony, NXP Semiconductors and Nokia in 2004 to improve NFC has revealed a plan to improve the technology. This plan should be implemented gradually, over a period of years 2023 – 2028. It includes five key initiatives that have also been supported by well-known companies such as Apple, Google and others. One of these initiatives is the extension of the range of this wireless communication.
Increased connection range up to six times
The group of companies says the goal is to extend the distance by four to six times. Currently, it is realistic to achieve connectivity under optimal conditions at a distance of approx. 5 mm. The novelty would be so called It turned "contactless payments" into truly contactless, which would speed up and simplify the transactions themselves. Moreover, according to the available information, a more precise setting of the NFC antenna is sufficient.
But the range improvement isn't the only update. NFC Forum wants to increase the performance of wireless charging via NFC technology from 1 W na 3 W. This would enable wireless charging of accessories or new charging options, including the creation of new applications that we do not know yet.
Another initiative is the support of multiple communication channels. This would allow several different actions to be performed with just one click. Additionally, the group said it will provide the feature to NFC-enabled smartphones Point-of-Sales and the ability to share how these products should be recycled.
However, these functions are still only part of the proposal and are several months to years away from real implementation in your device.
