Content and quality of packaging
The Wanbo T2 Max New projector was delivered to us by DPD courier in a compact box with dimensions of 200 x 154 x 230 mm and a total weight of 1.68 kg.
Similar to the older model, here too the manufacturer paid attention to quality packaging. The projector box is protected by another box. We personally like this style of product packaging, as the product box remains undamaged.
Inside, the projector is stored in foam reinforcements, and at the very bottom of the package there is a remote control together with an adapter and a cable for the mains. Batteries for the remote control are not included in the package. A small bonus is a series of stickers.
Design and quality of workmanship
At first glance, the design of the new model hardly differs from its predecessor. At a closer look, you will already notice several differences. Its vertical position has been preserved, where the front part is dominated by the lens and the large cooling grid. It grew very gently to dimensions of 113 x 146 x 156.5 mm.
However, the manual focus wheel has disappeared from the top, as the new product has automatic focus with the option of focusing via the remote control. The opposite, underside is home to the tripod thread. Unfortunately, it is still shallow, so it does not hold firmly when attached to a standard tripod, as it cannot be tightened to the stop. The solution is to use a kind of pad.
The back side contains HDMI ports, USB, a power port and a port for connecting a 3.5 mm headphone jack. Here, too, there is a grille that covers a larger area compared to the older model.
Brightness, image and its quality
The Wanbo T2 Max New projector can boast of better brightness, which has increased from 200 to 450 ANSI lumens. The lens itself should also have been improved so that the projector could produce a more beautiful image with better colors and support for HDR10 was added.
The physical resolution has not changed, it remains at Full HD 1920 x 1080 px, even if you can also find the 4K logo in the presentation materials. We no longer have the older model available for direct comparison, but even 450 ANSI lumens are not enough for comfortable projection on the wall during the day. We have to shade the room to see the picture well.
It is much better in twilight or during darkness. We do not feel that the image quality has improved too much. The brightness is better, but we cannot expect miracles from a projector for 150 EUR.
Image size, fit and focus
Wanbo T2 Max New can display an image of 40 to 100 inches depending on the distance from the wall or screen. The minimum distance is 1.1 m and the maximum is 2.6 m. Here there was a deterioration, as the older model could display up to a 200" image at a distance of 4 m.
At a distance of 1.1 m, the image size is 40", at 1.6 m it is 60", at 2.1 m it is already 80" and at a maximum distance of 2.6 m it is 100". The projector can display the image from different angles, which is what the projection setting is for. You can also fix it upside down on the ceiling, or it doesn't have to be perpendicular to the wall. It is also possible to slightly enlarge or reduce the image, so the given sizes are indicative only.
Autofocus with the attribute AI works well, although the sharpness is not perfect at the very edges. A pair of buttons on the remote control serves for possible corrections or manual focusing.
Performance and storage
The manufacturer does not indicate which processor was used in this projector. Among the available parameters, we only find the RAM capacity, which has 1 GB along with 16 GB of storage. In this respect, the projector does not differ from its predecessor.
The system is mostly smooth and the responses to the remote control are mostly good, but some applications sometimes take longer to open than we would expect. Sometimes there are even slow reactions, especially if the batteries in the controller are not fully charged.
Overall, the performance is adequate for the low price. You simply have to take into account the occasional slower reactions.
As for cooling, the projector sucks in ambient air from the back and expels warm air to the front through the corresponding cooling grid. The noise level during its operation is around 34-35 dB.
Remote control
The included remote control is very pleasant to use. Its buttons are rubberized, they click gently when pressed, and overall it fits well in the hand. It has several buttons such as on / off, display the mouse cursor, call up the menu or settings, mute the sounds, a button to return back or to the home screen.
A four-way rotary selector with confirmation in the center and a volume control are also standard. In addition to these regular buttons, we also have a pair of buttons for manual image focus.
Graphical interface
Compared to the older model Wanbo T2 Max, where Android is version 6, the new model Wanbo T2 Max New comes with a big improvement in the form of Android 9.0. The biggest change is visible in the initial screen, which was very simple and outdated in design in the older version.
In contrast, the home screen environment of the new model is already modern. At the top, we have the main menu, which includes Search, Home, Applications, Video, Music and Settings.
The home screen consists of tiles of sorts. At the top are large switchable tiles of Facebook, Spotify, YouTube, amazon prime video and Netflix apps. Below them are smaller tiles, where we can again find the applications shown above along with others. These include BBC News, Chrome, Disney+, TuneIn and HDTV.
Except for YouTube and Netflix, however, these tiles are just download links for the respective apps. At first glance, it seems like there are a huge number of pre-installed apps, but in reality, most of them are just download links.
Those that are actually installed can be found in the Applications tab, under the My Applications category. These include BlueTooth Speaker, Miracast, EShareServer, iMirror, Google Play Store, Browser, YouTube and Netflix. The rest of the applications, which are also divided into categories in the Apps tab, are just the aforementioned links through which you can download them. Here we can also find our own App Store with applications.
Personally, we don't like this style too much, as overall the environment looks too crowded with different applications and links. Compared to the simple interface of Google TV or Android TV systems, this add-on is unnecessarily complicated.
In the Video and Music tabs we can find many links to videos of various genres from multimedia applications such as YouTube or Netflix. We have not found a way to remove these links.
Thanks to the presence of the Google Play Store, we can also install our Slovak services for watching online television such as Magio Go, Antik or Skylink or VOYO, HBO MAX and others.
More content tracking options
We can also play multimedia content from a storage device connected via USB, but the projector does not handle the latest H.265 codec. Another option is to connect an external device via HDMI or share content from a smartphone.
When sharing the smartphone screen, we can use the pre-installed EShareServer application, but it requires the installation of the EShare application on the smartphone as well. A simpler solution is Miracast.
The projector can also be used as a Bluetooth speaker thanks to the BlueTooth Speaker application.
Settings menu
The settings offer various customizations divided into eight categories. The first is the network settings, where the available WiFi networks are located. In the second category, Projector, we can find all the settings related to the projector image, such as projection orientation, zoom, calibration, automatic focus, etc. Trapezoid, where we can adjust all four corners of the image.
The third item in the settings menu is the choice of source, where we only have a choice of HDMI or USB. Furthermore, there is the Media Center multimedia player, which somehow, in our opinion, does not belong in the settings. There is also a separate tab for software update, Bluetooth for connecting accessories, Boot Source, or language settings. Slovak and Czech are not missing here.
The last options in the settings are memory cleaning and Options, which hide the time settings, network, information about the projector and the so-called common settings. These combine the settings we have already mentioned, supplemented by others such as applications, image settings (default modes, custom brightness, contrast, saturation and sharpness), sound including equalizer, timer, screen saver or keyboard settings.
The menu of settings is quite rich, but again they are arranged in a somewhat strange way.
Speakers and sound quality
Behind the rear grill, in addition to cooling, we also find a pair of 3 W speakers, which are broadband and have a minimum frequency of 60 Hz. Compared to the older model, the sound quality should improve by up to 80%.
In general, the speakers of projectors do not stand out, but in this case it is a noticeable improvement compared to its predecessor. The sound is better, the bass is more pronounced, although there is still room for improvement. The volume is sufficient and the overall sound quality is really good for this price level.
However, we still have the option of connecting an external audio source. We personally tried connecting a Samsung soundbar via Bluetooth, but it did not work without problems. The sound was often interrupted.
Wanbo T2 Max New: Final review
The new model of the famous Wanbo T2 Max projector with the attribute New brings several improvements compared to its predecessor in an almost identical body design. The brightness has increased from 200 to 450 ANSI lumens, the novelty has received automatic focus and the sound quality has also improved.
The new projector also received a newer Android, namely version 9.0, which comes with a significantly more modern graphics environment. However, the system is cluttered with many links to various applications, videos or music from well-known multimedia services. Probably because of this, the projector's reactions are sometimes slower.
