Content and quality of packaging
The Mecool KM2 Plus Deluxe TV box was brought to us by courier in a compact box with dimensions of only 200 x 135 x 58 mm and a total weight of 609 g.
In the box we find the TV box itself in a protective shaped cardboard, under which the accessories are stored. This consists of a power adapter, a remote control and an HDMI cable. There is an instruction manual.
The box is made of hard cardboard and the TV box is sufficiently protected against damage during transport.
Design and quality of workmanship
In terms of design, many Chinese TV boxes are quite flashy, colorful and look like something from a sci-fi movie. However, Mecool KM2 Plus Deluxe is not one of those and its design is elegant and handled very well.
It is made of plastic, but the quality of processing is at a high level. The appearance is completed by a glossy top cover with the brand logo, which gives the TV box a characteristic design.
As for the layout of the individual elements, in the front part we find only three signaling LEDs, while the ports for external connections are located on the left and back sides. Specifically, it is 2 x USB, microSD card slot, 3.5 mm port, SPDIF, AV, HDMI, LAN and power port.
The TV box does not have active cooling, so it does not make unnecessary noise.
Powerful hardware with 4K support
The Amlogic S905X4 quad-core processor, which consists of ARM Cortex-A55 cores, takes care of the performance. It supports AV1 HDR and 4K HDR at 60 fps. This is not a cheap TV box with low resolution, on the contrary, it ranks among the top Chinese Android TV boxes.
The processor is supported by RAM type DDR4 with a capacity of 4 GB and internal storage EMMC with a capacity of 32 GB. For comparison, the popular Xiaomi TV Box S of the second generation has 2 GB of RAM and 8 GB of ROM.
There is also support for Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos or HDR, HDR10+ or HLG technologies. The TV box can handle a number of codecs, including H.265 (HEVC) and others, which you can find in the table with specifications.
You don't have to worry about a lack of performance, as this TV box has beefed-up hardware that will ensure trouble-free operation.
Android TV system
Since the Mecool KM2 Plus Deluxe has Widevine L1 security, it is an officially certified TV box for Google and other streaming platforms such as Netflix or Disney+. This means that you can easily enjoy your favorite movies and series in the highest quality without any restrictions.
Immediately after the initial switch on, we are greeted by the Android TV screen, which we have here in version 11. We can also perform the initial settings via a smartphone, thanks to which we avoid entering passwords via the controller and simply copy our Google account via smartphone.
Just as easily, during the initial settings, we can import applications that we used on another device that was linked to our Google account.
Since it is a standard Android TV system, your life will not be made uncomfortable by unnecessary pre-installed applications that you will never use. Apart from Google services, only Netflix and prime video, YouTube and button mapping apps are pre-installed.
Thanks to Android TV, we can install various applications from the Google Play store here, which are adapted for TV screens. For example, we used KODI for multimedia content and AntikTV for watching TV channels. However, we can also find many others such as Skylink, Magio TV, VOYO, Orange TV or O2 TV and others.
The system is perfectly smooth, it responds immediately to the remote control and we observed absolutely no hesitations or stuttering. Mecool KM2 Plus Deluxe is excellently tuned for a perfect user experience.
Remote control with many buttons
While many TV boxes are bundled with a minimalist remote control with a minimum of buttons, Mecool is an exception. The remote control is quite large, measuring 18.4 x 3.9 x 1.8 cm and has a lot of buttons.
There is not even a traditional dial or four colored buttons. Next, we have classic direction buttons with confirmation in the middle, going to settings, to the home screen or voice control and more.
The popular services YouTube, Netflix, prime video and Google Play also have their separate buttons here. Thanks to the pre-installed App Key Definition application, we can change the functions of these four buttons. We have all installed applications to choose from.
Otherwise, the remote control is comfortably held in the hand and the buttons are pleasant to press. Personally, however, a smaller controller would be enough for us, and we wouldn't miss a dial together with some other buttons at all.
Connectivity and connectivity options
As we mentioned in the introduction, Mecool KM2 Plus Deluxe is richly equipped in terms of connectivity. In terms of physical connectivity, we have two USB 2.0 ports, one HDMI 2.1, microSD card slot, SPDIF port for optical soundbar connection, AV CVBS & L/R output, 3.5 mm port for connecting headphones and a LAN port with a speed of 1 Gbit/s.
However, to play content from a USB stick, you will need any player, as the Android TV system does not include one. Although it recognizes the USB stick, it does not have any application for browsing or playing files.
In terms of wireless connectivity, we can look forward to support for WiFi 6 in both bands (2.4 and 5 GHz) or Bluetooth 5.0. These are not the latest standards, but WiFi in version 6 is definitely pleasing, as it is still not a matter of course, and certainly not for Chinese TV boxes.
A built-in chromecast for sharing content from a smartphone or tablet is a matter of course.
Mecool KM2 Plus Deluxe: Final evaluation
The Mecool KM2 Plus Deluxe TV box is one of the best Chinese TV boxes on the market. It supports 4K resolution at 60 fps, AV1 HDR or H.265 codecs, has rich connectivity and has the Android TV system in version 11.
The system is thus ideal for televisions with support for many applications. You can also look forward to the official support of Netflix and other streaming services thanks to Widevine L1. The LAN port with a speed of 1 Gbit/s and WiFi 6 in both bands will also please you.
It's hard to find negatives with such a fancy TV box, so we can clearly recommend it to everyone, even more demanding users who can tolerate 4K resolution.
