Oppo X 2021: The first smartphone with an expandable display
Smartphone manufacturers are constantly pushing the boundaries of technology with their innovations. Every year we witness new functions in flagship models, whether it is fast charging, a display without a cutout, a display with space, a high refresh rate, etc.
Chinese Oppo however, it decided to build on the model for the coming year Oppo X 2021 (Rollable Concept). This smartphone will be the first in the world with new expandable display technology. We could see the company's development efforts at the current Inno Day 2020 event.
The display of this prepared device is able to expand from the diagonal 6,7" on the total 7,4 ". It may not seem to you that this is a significant difference, but the opposite is true. The manufacturer achieves a larger area of the display panel thanks to its own technology.
Thanks to this technology, the display is flexible without forcible folding and also ensures the elimination of visible signs after bending, which we can currently observe on competing flexible smartphones.
OLED display and durable 2 in 1 layer
As for the display panel itself, Oppo offers an OLED display, which also includes a 6,8 mm scroll motor with its own design. The Chinese company filed an application for a total of up to 122 patents, using only 12 of them in its final design and technology.
The Chinese manufacturer also thought about the durability and support structure under the scroll panel. There is a specific 2 in 1 layer, which serves as a support when downloading or stretching the display. It is the support layer resp. the support panel also has two parts and slides out along with the display.
This protection technology maintains a solid structure and achieves a perfectly flat surface. Oppo researcher Henry Tang claims the following:
"Compared to folding technologies, scrolling displays are much more flexible because they are adjustable between minimum and maximum size for different application scenarios."
Laminate layer to increase durability
The construction of the device also includes a custom-made laminate for additional protection. The Warp Track material is a laminate with a thickness of only 0,1 mm, which firmly protects the screen. This is an additional reinforcement that protects the device during standard use.
Laminate could offer an extension of the technology in the future, and promising technology could offer even more space for playing games or reading e-books in the future. As for other technical specifications, we do not know them yet. The device is still in the concept phase, although the manufacturer believes that it will be able to bring this technology to customers at the right time.
