Electric bicycle Engwe Engine Pro we tested in the editorial office and he pleasantly surprised us. Compared to the predecessor EP-2 Pro, which we also tested, the Engine Pro is even more powerful 750 W engine, which is felt especially during start-up and maximum speed. With our approximately 90 kg bike it has no problem reaching 50 km/h, which is already a very decent speed.
The bike arrives in a proper box, assembly is very simple
The thick 20 x 4″ tires are extremely comfortable even in more demanding terrain, where the bike feels at home. Before the first off-road ride, we recommend checking all the screws on the bike, especially tightening the folding handlebars properly.
They loosened up while driving off-road, but it wasn't anything that couldn't be fixed on the spot. After proper tightening, this problem did not recur. Riding through forest paths is an incredible experience on this bike, and the engine's performance constantly surprises us, literally bringing a smile to our faces. We even felt like we were riding a motorbike.
We also have to highlight the very high-quality Logan brand hydraulic brakes, which are the best Chinese brakes. For example, a 3500-euro scooter has the same brakes Nami Burn E 2 Max. We also praise the effective color display, which shows basic data and is easily visible even in direct sunlight.
3 driving modes, up to 5 speed steps
He has a bicycle 3 driving modes – Eco, Normal and Sport. In each mode, you can then set the speed level from 0 to 5. At level 0, the engine does not help at all, at level 5, the bike is set to 99% power. In Sport mode and level 2, the bike reaches a speed in the range of 20-25 km/h.
We were surprised that you can customize these speed modes in the settings - you can set any number of performance percentages for each mode. If 5 speed modes are too much for you, you can even choose 3.
We'll admit that most of the time we ride this bike in Sport mode in gear 5, i.e. at full power. That way we will enjoy the ride the most. There is also an accelerator lever on the handlebars, so there is no need to pedal at all on the bike.
Of course, when turning the pedals, the bike helps you with the engine, in Sport mode it is to a very significant degree, so much so that you turn the pedals empty and only the engine pulls. If you want to do at least a little sport on this bike, we recommend setting the Eco mode.
As far as transfers are concerned, the user has at his disposal 8-speed Shimano Altus derailleur. On the front side, there is only a large rosette, without the possibility of changing gears.
What are its disadvantages?
In our case, the accelerator lever is located on the left side, which is a bit unusual. But it is not a problem to switch the lever to the right side. We noticed that smooth throttle control is not possible with this lever, rather it only serves as a switch between 0 and 1, i.e. it either goes or doesn't go.
The advantage, however, is that the bike can be customized according to your taste, it is not a problem to order a better accelerator, such as wider handlebars, because the factory ones are relatively narrow.
As far as the suspension is concerned, the front fork is pretty soft and the advantage is the possibility to adjust the intensity of the suspension. However, the same cannot be said about the rear shock absorber, which is relatively hard and does not have any extra spring even with our 90 kg. However, it is nothing that would prevent the use of the bike, but if you want to embellish it, we would definitely replace both the front fork and the rear shock absorber.
Real range: The manufacturer does not lie
As for the range, it is located in the frame of the bicycle 16 Ah (48 V / 768 Wh) removable battery, which we tested as follows. A rider with a weight of about 90 kg, we set the purely electric Eco mode and gear 5 on the bike. We went full speed the whole time, which resulted in an average speed of 37 km/h according to the display (33,9 km/h according to GPS).
We drove for about an hour and covered 37 km according to the display (33,76 km according to GPS), while under load the display still showed 50% battery remaining. This bike is without any pedaling, i.e. in purely electric mode with the Eco setting able to travel at least 60 km. If the rider were to lose some weight and choose a lower gear, the range would certainly be extended.
Thus, this figure fits exactly with what the manufacturer states, which is not often seen with electric movers of this type. Definitely a thumbs up for this.
Engwe Engine Pro: Our review
Already a model Engwe We had a lot of fun testing the EP-2 Pro and its improved brother Engwe Engine Pro intensifies these feelings in us even more. The Engine Pro is simply fun to ride and will put a smile on your face every time you put it on.
Thanks to the sufficiently powerful 750 W motor, you can speed up to 50 km/h on the bike, making it one of the faster electric shifters. It is ideal not only for the city, but also outside the city, as the 16 Ah battery provides enough energy for 60 km long rides.
We see the only minor disadvantages of the bike in the suspension, respectively in the front fork and the rear shock absorber, which, however, are not a problem to replace with higher quality components. Overall though Engwe We can only recommend Engine Pro. In our subjective opinion, this is one of the best Chinese electric fat bikes you can buy for under €1500.
