The development of smartphones is advancing at a dizzying pace. Companies want to bring users the best possible photos and at the same time they want to differentiate themselves from the competition. Samsung has patented an interesting system of a moving camera module.
Movable camera system
The 19-page patent documentation was issued on August 5, 2021 and contains an extensive description of the mobile camera module technology, which was patented for the US Office (USPTO) and belongs to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) database.
It concerns the implementation of three lenses, namely wide-angle, ultra-wide-angle and telephoto. This is the most common combination for flagships. The lower classes often forget about the telephoto lens and replace it with a useless macro lens.
In the center is the main wide-angle lens and the other two are located at its side, with each lens having a different field of view. If necessary, the main lens can be moved down, sliding the other cameras in and creating a triangle-shaped layout.
Changing the distance also changes the aperture. It is therefore a moving camera with a variable aperture and a variable angle of view. Other benefits of this system include precise depth-of-field adjustment and better quality photos taken in low light conditions.
We already had something similar here
Already with the Samsung Galaxy S9 and S10 smartphones, Samsung came up with variable aperture technology, which were tied to the main wide-angle lens. Thanks to the new camera system, all three lenses will be equipped with a variable aperture.
It is not yet known when we will see this patent proposal in a real product. The development of this technology may take several years to be able to function properly. However, it is good to observe that Samsung is also involved in such a development and mainly wants to differentiate itself from the competition.
